Richmond Hill High School (11-16) takes on Jones County (19-9) tonight in Gray in the first round of the boys’ state Class AAAAA basketball tournament.
The Greyhounds are the No. 2 seed from Region 2-AAAAA.
The Wildcats are the No. 3 seed from Region 3-AAAAA after Jeremiah Hill’s buzzer beater lifted Richmond Hill to a 50-49 win over Windsor Forest on Saturday in the battle for third in Region 3-AAAAA.
Hill finished with 16 points for the Wildcats, who also got 12 from Nick Fitzgerald, nine from Daniel Wilder and seven from Terence McCall. Kameron Meyers and Eugene Irvin both chipped in three points each for Richmond Hill, which will have to play well to have a shot against Jones County, which is led by Florida state signee Jarquez Smith and junior shooting guard Brandon Wimberly.
Smith, a 6-foot-9 senior, is averaging 15 points, 12 rebounds and seven blocks a game, according to the team’s statistics on Maxpreps. The 6-foot-3 Wimberly is considered one of the state’s top 100 players and is scoring 15.2 points a contest.
“They’re a good team that does a lot of things well,” said RHHS coach Bill Henderson. “They have a couple of kids that can really play and some good size. We are going to have to put together a really good effort and have everyone give their best effort for the entire game in order to be successful. We’ll have to play good defense, box out and rebound, and be patient on the offensive end.”
Tipoff is at 6:30 p.m.
