In his first year at the helm last year as a junior, quarterback Gunner Mobley admittedly experienced some growing pains. He completed just 122 of 215 attempts for 1,454 yards with 11 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. And the Wildcats, in turn, hit their share of road bumps on their way to an overall 6-5 season.

But now, Mobley and his senior- ladened team have another year under their belts, and they are currently considered among the state’s elite in the Class 6A Region 1 class.

Mobley didn’t waste any time preparing for this season.

“I feel like we never reached our full potential, and we have more to accomplish,” said Mobley. “I started working towards this season right after last season ended because I knew I needed to be better for the team.

“I put on about 15 pounds, and the whole team hit the weight room hard during the offseason.”

Yet, Mobley still has some lingering memories from last season. It did help him recall what part of his game he needed to improve. Last season, Mobley’s arguably one of best performances was a 262-yard, three touchdown performance in a 24-21 loss to Colquitt County.

“Last year was definitely humbling,” reflected Mobley. “It showed me where I needed to grow this offseason. A key part of my game that I worked on this offseason was being on time with my throws and commanding the offense better.

“For me, it was studying the game more and watching more film to see my mistakes and work on fixing them.

Head coach Matt LeZotte has been impressed with Mobely’s offseason work ethic and approach.

“Gunner Mobley has taken a major step forward this offseason, showing just how comfortable he has become within our offensive scheme,” said LeZotte. “His understanding of the system allows him to make adjustments on the fly, communicate effectively with his teammates, and keep the offense operating efficiently. Mobley’s demeanor and focus also has been elevated.

“More than anything, Gunner is playing with a calm, composed demeanor that reflects his growing confidence,” added LeZotte. “The game has slowed down for him, and that poise has allowed him to make better decisions while providing steady leadership for our offense heading into the season.”

Mobley’s football beginnings can be linked to the University of Georgia and the Bulldogs.

“I started football after watching many Georgia games,” recalled Mobely. “Since then, I have always wanted to play. My favorite memory is throwing the first touchdown in the new stadium last year.

With the season opener at home against Effingham County Aug. 21, Mobley already is anxious and ready to begin the 2026 campaign. He sees a tight bond among his teammates.

“The chemistry this year will be like none other as we are returning mostly everybody from last year,” said Mobley. “We are very hungry this year and we all believe we have something to prove.”
