The Bryan County softball team bounced back from its first region loss of the season to defeat St. Vincent’s 2-1 in eight innings Tuesday in Savannah.

Brooke Barfield was the winning pitcher and singled home the winning run as the Lady Redskins raised their record to 11-4 overall and 5-1 in Region 2-AA.

St. Vincent’s fell to 3-7 and 1-6.

Layton Harrell’s run-scoring single put BCHS up 1-0 in the first inning.

St. Vincent’s tied the score in the fifth when Amber Reagan tripled — the Saints’ only hit of the game — and scored on an error.

The Barfield sisters combined to pitch the one-hitter.

Shelby Barfield pitched the first six innings, allowing the one unearned run while striking out four batters and walking one. Brooke Barfield came on in relief to hurl two hitless innings with five strikeouts and no walks.

It was the Lady Redskins’ first game since falling 2-0 to Vidalia on Aug. 27 in a battle for first place in Region 2-AA. Vidalia (13-0, 6-0) beat Jeff Davis 2-0 on Tuesday to maintain its one-game lead over Bryan County in the region standings.

BCHS will play at Jeff Davis tonight at 6 and host Long County at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday.

RHHS wins fourth straight

The Richmond Hill Lady Wildcats extended their winning streak to four with a 5-1 victory over Liberty County in a non-region game Tuesday at home.

The Lady Wildcats have outscored their opponents 39-1 during the streak. Prior to Tuesday’s win, RHHS posted consecutive shutouts of Bradwell (13-0), Southeast Bulloch (5-0) and Statesboro (16-0).

Richmond Hill (7-4 overall, 2-1 in Region 3-AAAAA) will return to region play tonight at 6 at Effingham County.

The Lady Wildcats will make another trip to Effingham on Saturday to play Brookwood and Colquitt County in a tournament hosted by South Effingham High School.

RHHS will play a pair of home games next week, against Savannah Country Day at 5 p.m. Tuesday and against Calvary at 6 p.m. Wednesday.
