Focus is on kids at Earth Day celebration
Keep Liberty Beautiful

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to travel through a storm drain? This week many local children will have the chance to do just that.
Normally, the only travelers through our storm drains are rain water and, unfortunate, litter and debris. The drain journey is one of 80 games, crafts and exhibits at our Earth Day Celebration on April 22. Keep Liberty Beautiful’s fourth annual celebration will be a fun-filled afternoon of exhibits and displays, games and crafts that focus on ways we can “go green” and make a difference for our planet.
Kids are the focus. Earth Day: The Green Scene will be from 3-5:30 p.m. on Thursday at a new location, the former Brewton-Parker Campus off Highway 84 in Flemington. The new location has afforded room to expand to provide many more games and activities as well as parking.
Sponsors are the Liberty County Health Department, Georgia Power, the Liberty County Convention and Visitors Bureau, Prevent Child Abuse Liberty and cities of Hinesville, Flemington, Allenhurst and Walthourville, as well as Liberty and Long counties.
We also have the support of volunteer power from the Target Distribution Center, the Bradwell Institute Beta Club and, of course, the dedicated members of our Keep Liberty Beautiful Advisory Council. The other key component of this event is the variety of businesses and organizations participating; Georgia Coastal DNR, the Fort Stewart DPW Division, Brewer’s Christmas Tree Farm, Farmers Natural Foods, the Sierra Club, the Hinesville Area Arts Council, the YMCA, Liberty County 4-H, McDonalds, Melon Bluff Nature Preserve, Lecounte Woodmanston, Liberty County Schools, The Heritage Bank, the Liberty County Health Department, Prevent Child Abuse Liberty, the Coastal Empire Flight Academy, Riverkeepers, Hampton Island, the Georgia Forestry Commission, the local Girl Scouts, the Coastal Electric Cooperative, Environmental Health, and Goodwill Industries, who will also be accepting electronics and household goods for recycling.
Litter prevention, the value of trees, water conservation, cigarette litter, recycling, composting, green energy products, organic gardening, and nature and animal exhibits will all be addressed. There’ll also be a slew of fun activities, including the drain trek, sidewalk chalk art contest, mini-geocaching, Curby the Recycling Robot,  jug jiggle art and a water fortune telling   gypsy.
There are raffles every half hour for a variety of prizes from iPods to a free summer flight camp.
More than 700 kids and their adults came last year and we have room for even more this year. It is free and it is fun!
