United Way campaign kickoff date announced

Mark your calendars for Thursday, Sept. 13. That's the date for the 2018 United Way of the Coastal Empire -- Bryan County -- Campaign Kickoff.

The event, in which organizers announce their campaign amount goal, will be held from 11:45 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Richmond Hill City Center at J.F. Gregory Park.

The lunch event is free, but RSVP is required by Sept. 4. Go to the website UWCE.org/events to register.

Last year's United Way of the Coastal Empire campaign raised $8.4 million regionally (and $175,000 in Bryan County) in support of 92 programs operated by 60 nonprofit organizations.

Bryan County Commissioners on Tuesday night deferred a decision on whether to rezone some 3.8 acres near the historic Burnt Church Cemetery to allow a Parker’s Kitchen convenience store. The vote to defer the decision for 30 days to look into concerns raised by opponents to the project came after several residents – including parents of children buried in the 195-year-old cemetery – urged commissioners to deny the rezoning.
