The point that Bryan County NAACP Chapter Co-chairman Dave Williams emphasized at Monday’s meeting at Bryan Neck Church in Richmond Hill is this: the chapter needs more Bryan County members to be rechartered as a branch of the organization.
Williams said that the group must sign up 45 new Bryan County members in order to retain their status. The chapter currently has 55 members.
Williams encouraged all existing members to reach out to others in the community for enlistment, and said the group should remain vigilant in trying to meet that mark.
Williams is hopeful that the upcoming Black History Month celebration in Pembroke will draw new members. The event, set for March 4 at a location to be announced, will include a turkey dinner and will feature speakers who will spotlight prominent black citizens in Bryan County’s history.
Newly appointed NAACP National Regional Director Francys Johnson, pastor of Mount Moriah Church in Pembroke, is slated to appear, and state NAACP President Edward Dubose may attend along with other area representatives.
Other topics discussed at the meeting included:
• Talk of the newly thriving Bryan County job market due to the industrial park at I-16 and Hwy 280.
Williams detailed his discussions with Family Connection Director Tara Jennings and Industrial Authority Director Jean Bacon about the proposition of using the Family Connection bus for commuters to encourage employment.
• Discussion of some existing concerns regarding the Bryan County Board of Education hiring policy. Williams said this was brought to his attention by a black applicant who feels she did not get a fair shake when she applied to the system.
He said the issue will be looked into and is a priority because of the current lack of black teachers in Bryan County.
