Each year the Richmond Hill Garden Club awards to a Richmond Hill High School qualifying senior student a $1,000 scholarship. This year we are pleased to announce the student receiving the Scholarship is Alana Martin. Ms. Martin ranked in the top 5% of her class at Richmond Hill High School. She is an Honor Roll student and a member of the National Honor Society.

Protecting and maintaining a healthy environment has always been apriority in her life. Her love for gardening and preserving the environment started in elementary school. In the fourth grade she wrote a letter to the principal asking for a gardening club, and to build a greenhouse with solar panels in the count yard. This idea sparked the beginning of a 4-year journey, and the school has benefitted by generating electricity and providing fresh fruits and vegetables for the salad bar and other events.

She chose to pursue a degree in environment engineering. She sums up mission statement by saying “I chose to pursue a degree in environmental engineering because I believe that everyone has something to offer our world. I want to use what I am best at to make the world a better, cleaner, and safer place. This can be accomplished in many ways, there are many jobs that focus on preserving our environment. I know that environmental engineering was the right choice because it a combination of what I am best at, and what I’m passionate about. I can’t wait to continue this journey and further my education in college. I may only be one person, but I want to make a long-lasting impact on the world. Making it a greener place.”

Ms. Martin has been accepted to attend Georgia Southern University. She will begin in the fall of this year.

The club appreciates her taking the time to apply for the scholarship and wish her great success.
