Operation Rising Star now in round 3

Round three of the “Operation Rising Star," the Army’s equivalent of “American Idol,” begins at 7 p.m. Thursday at Rocky’s Warrior Zone.

And, while contestants do their best, a Hunter/Stewart unit or FRG will be taking another step toward a “Spirit Award” of $100 to $300.

The top three “Rising Star” singers will win prizes ranging from $100 to $500

Judges will pick the win from performances at the start of Oktoberfest at 4 p.m. Oct. 12 at Club Stewart.

Audience vote at semi-finals and finals will count for half of winner’s score.

The “Spirit Award” will be go to the unit or FRG with the best supportive presence at all four competitions, regardless of contestant participation. The $100 to $300 prize will be deposited in the unit/FRG fund.

Post-Wide garage sale

The Great FMWR Post-Wide Housing Garage Sale will be held from 8 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday.

Only post-housing residents are eligible to sell, but everyone, including civilians, is invited to shop throughout Stewart and Hunter post housing areas.

Golf scramble

Hunter garrison commander Lt. Col. Clarence W. Bowman’s golf scramble at Hunter Golf Course is set for Oct. 11. Players are asked to register by Oct. 9.

Play begins at 1 p.m. The $40 per person entry fee includes greens and cart fees, range balls and light lunch.

Tybee Pirate Fest

The streets of Tybee Island will transformed into an armada of pirate ships Oct. 12 and you are invited don your pirate attire to be part Pirate Fest. Leisure Travel will make a trip to the island at 1 p.m. Oct. 12. The cost is $20 for adults and $15 for children. The registration deadline is Oct. 9.

The second annual Salute to Oktoberfest, featuring food, music and fun, will be outside Club Stewart on Oct. 12.

Events begin with a 5K Mug & Volksmarch at 2 p.m. Then, at 4, Stewart/Hunter’s Rising Star will be chosen.

Then it’s music by Darry & the Veil, games and amusements, craft and food vendors. Tickets are needed to participate in the various amusements and are $1 each, $20 for a wristband, and $60 per family for four wristbands.  

So, come out if you’re looking to put a little oompah into your Saturday. The public’s welcome and the event is free.


Bingo lingo

Never played bingo or taken a chance to win cash and prizes?

Free classes will be given Oct. 14 from 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. and Oct. 17 from 5-6:30 p.m. at Fort Stewart Bingo, adjacent to Club Stewart.

Zoo Spooktacular

Costume run

Put on your Halloween costume, get ready for fun and maybe even win a prize during the Family Costume Fun Run at 10 a.m. Oct. 19 at Hunter Army Airfield. Registration begins at 9:30 a.m. at the starting point, Stephen Douglas Street and North Perimeter Road.

There’s no charge, and you can run 5K or 1.5 mile. Register that day of the event at its starting point, Stephen Douglas Street and Perimeter Road.

Prizes will be given for the best Halloween costume worn by adult, child, and pet. Participants must run/walk the course to win.

Halloween Hoopfest

Halloween Hoopfest at Newman Fitness Center is set for Oct. 25 and 26.

Men and women will compete in 3 on 3 basketball tournament and a 3-point shoot-out. The first game will begin at 6 p.m. The shoot-out will begin at noon Oct. 26.

Army civilians and area residents are invited to play or watch. There’s no charge for spectators, who are encouraged to wear a costume without a mask. Players must register by Oct. 8.

The cost to enter is $20 per player for the tournament and $5 per person for the shoot-out

Wildlife photo contest

Stewart/Hunter amateur photographers with military IDs are invited to submit wildlife-themed photos for the Wildlife Photo Contest.

Submissions will be accepted until Dec. 31 at the Pass and Permit Office. No pet photos.

Fees are $15 (ages 18 and older), $10 (ages 16-17) and $5 (ages 15 and under). Age groups with less than 5 entries will receive certificates instead of cash prizes.

Body building

Early registration is under way for The Rock Body Building and Figures Contest Nov. 2 at Woodruff Theater.

Weigh-in will be at 8 a.m., prejudging at10:30 and the finals at 6:30 p.m. It costs $2 to watch prejudging and $5 for the finals.

The cost to register until Oct. 11 is $25. It is $35 to register from Oct. 12 until the day. There is an additional crossover fee of $15. Sign up at Newman Fitness Center. 

Awards will be presented for first, second and third place in the following seven divisions.
