Last week, I was watching a college football bowl game when a commercial came on with a certain slogan that caught my attention.

The slogan stated, “There’s always next year.” I believe a couple of ideas behind this is that for the college football team, if they don’t win, then there is always another opportunity next year, and also if the viewer didn’t join the party at this restaurant/bar this year then there is always the opportunity next year.

As I thought over that statement, I realized in reality for many it would not work out for them.

None of us are guaranteed that things that did not work out for us in 2015 will automatically work out for us in 2016. The truth of the matter is we don’t even have a guarantee that we will be alive tomorrow.

In the book of James, chapter 4, verses 14-15, we are told, “Yet you do not know what your life will be like tomorrow. You are just a vapor that appears for a little while and then vanishes away. Instead, you ought to say, ‘If the Lord wills, we will live and also do this or that.’”

Even though we do not know how much time we have left or what our future holds, we can live each day in this new year doing our best in serving Jesus Christ and others. We can have as our slogan what the poet wrote when he said, “Only one life, ‘twill soon be past, Only what’s done for Christ will last.”
