Remember the One who gave us life
pastor corner

We are approaching Memorial Day weekend, and it is sneaking up on many of us. It is a bit of a quirk that Memorial Day does not follow the last Sunday of May this year. Nevertheless, we pause this weekend to remember.

But what do we remember?

It seems to me that the main focus of Memorial Day is to remember the sacrifice made by so many for the good of the rest of us. As you consider the many conflicts in which our nation has been engaged, one thing comes to mind. Many have given their lives so that we might have the freedoms that we hold so dear in this land of ours.

Within my own family, just going back a couple of generations, both of my grandfathers served in World War I. I had a number of uncles on both sides of my family who served in World War II and the Korean War. I had one cousin who was in Vietnam, and I have had a number of nephews and nieces who have served in more recent days. The amazing thing is that not one of those relatives paid the ultimate sacrifice. They all came home.

But that is certainly not the case for many of you. The pain of death has hit many of you much more closely than that as a result of war. You surely know the meaning of Memorial Day.

Our nation has so much for which to be thankful. Again, so many have given their lives so that the rest of us can live freely. And for that we are grateful.

But when I think of Memorial Day, I must share that one more thought comes to my mind. I remember the One who gave his life so that we might live forever. Yes, I am speaking of Jesus of Nazareth. As I remember the heroes of our nation this weekend, I also will remember what my Savior did for me on Calvary, and I will give thanks for each of those sacrifices.

The truth is that we live in a blessed land. Too often, we take that for granted. Some take advantage. We need to be careful. But we also need to remember that all we have is a gift from the One who made us.

Take time to remember and give thanks this weekend. God has been good. We owe him our very lives.
