Bryan mourns passing of E. Billy Miles

Mr. Edgar Billy Miles age 88 died Wednesday November 5, 2014 at his home while surrounded by his family.

Mr. Miles was born February 27, 1926 in Hinesville to Evelyn Shave Miles and Edgar William Miles. He and his family moved to Pembroke when Mr. Miles was a boy. He attended Bryan County Schools and graduated Bryan County High School in 1943.

Mr. Miles enjoyed a career in banking spanning more than five decades. He began his career at Pembroke State Bank as an assistant cashier in 1946. After holding many positions within the bank including cashier, director, and executive vice-president, he retired as president of the bank in 1991 and remained on the board of directors until 2000. In addition to his service to Pembroke State Bank and later to First Bank of Coastal Georgia, he was very active in his community. Mr. Billy was a councilman for the City of Pembroke from 1963-1983; served on board of the Georgia Area Community Action Authority and the board of Bryan County Industrial Authority.

He was a deacon in First Baptist Church of Pembroke and Emeritus board member at Selectman Midway Historical Church. Mr. Miles was also inducted into the Pembroke Masonic Lodge #469 F & AM in 1947 .

He was preceded in death by his parents Evelyn Shave and Edgar William Miles; step-mother Hazel Purdom Miles; brothers and a sister-in-law Thomas G. Miles, Sr., Jimmie S. and Joyce N. Miles, Sr., Glynn Miles; and nephew Dale Miles. Survivors include twin sisters and their husbands Ella and J. Harry Lewis of Pembroke and Lila and Durward L. Blocker of Richmond Hill; one brother and two sister-in-laws, Frank P. and Sherri Miles of Savannah and Ida L. Miles of Pembroke; and numerous beloved nieces, nephews and cousins.

Visitation will be 5-9 P.M. Friday, Nov. 7, 2014 at Flanders Morrison Funeral Home. Funeral service will be held 2 P.M. Saturday November 8, 2014. Mr. Miles will lie in state from 1 P.M. to 2 P.M. at First Baptist Church of Pembroke. Dr. Michael S. Lewis and Dr. Bradley Butler will be officiating. Burial will follow in Northside Cemetery with Dr. James Correll officiating.

Pallbearers will be Thomas G. Miles, Jr., Jimmie S. Miles, Jr., Robert E. Miles, Keith L. Blocker, Gregory M. Blocker, D. Mark Lewis, Shawn E. Miles, and Herbert Jenkins. Pembroke Masonic Lodge #469 F & AM and fellow deacons of his church will serve as honorary pallbearers.

Flanders Morrison Funeral Home of Pembroke is in charge of the arrangements.
