The 2018 STAR students from Bryan County and Richmond Hill high schools have been announced.

The recipients are Kailey Griffith from Richmond Hill and Shelby Barfield from Bryan County.

The award, which stands for Star Teacher Achievement Recognition, is based on academic achievement and performance on the SAT. It is sponsored by PAGE — the Professional Association of Georgia Educators. Recipients must be in the top 10 percent of their senior class.

Griffith, a National Merit Scholarship semifinalist, said she wants to attend New York University to study international affairs with plans to become an environmental lawyer.

Barfield, who has signed a national letter of intent to play softball at Georgia Southern, is already dual-enrolled at the school and has said she is considering majoring in engineering.

School-level STAR recipients move on to regional and statewide competition with the possibility of winning scholarship money.
