Branton Champion and Jackson Behringer placed second Jan. 21 at the Georgia High School Association bass fishing Regional 1 tournament on Lake Seminole.

They had a total weight of 20.4 pounds. The finish earned them a trip to the GHSA state bass fishing tournament May 20 at Clark Hill.

Both juniors, Champion and Behringer  have fished in four GHSA qualifiers since they teamed up and have qualified for state every time. The two also won the Georgia Kayak Fishing High School state title last summer, according to Champion’s father, Ron Champion, a world-class kayak angler who competes in fresh and saltwater tournaments around the world.

The RHHS bass fishing team is coached by Amy Elkins and the senior Champion, and other RHHS fishing duos will have a chance to qualify for state in upcoming region tournaments.
