Summer championship season for local swim teams wrapped the first of August after a series of championship meets beginning in early July. Summer swim season focuses on 50-meter Olympic-sized competition pools, known as Long Course pools. This season runs from early spring until mid-summer.
Georgia Coastal Aquatic Team kicked off Long Course championship season by hosting the Peach State Championships South Long Course Showcase meet at the Chatham County Aquatic Center from July 10-12. This meet hosted swimmers from the southern part of Georgia in an end-of season meet as a precursor to state and national-level meets.
In Atlanta, at the McAuley Aquatic Center at Georgia Institute of Technology from July 16-19, swimmers in the 14 and under age group categories competed at the Georgia Age Group Long Course State Championship. Twenty-eight local swimmers representing GCAT competed in Atlanta, bringing home 12 medals. GCAT ranked second among mid-sized teams in the state, and 5th overall.
The following weekend, the 15 and up Senior level swimmers traveled to Athens to compete at the University of Georgia for the Georgia Long Course Senior State Championships. Eight senior level swimmers competed, with multiple finalists.
Wrapping up at the national level, the final weekend of July had swimmers in multiple states. One swimmer participated in the Southern Zones Age Group championship, competing against other states across the southeast. Four swimmers competed in Greensboro at USA Swimming Futures, a national-level meet that serves as a stepping stone to competing at Nationals.
Futures served as a send-off to two GCAT seniors as they move to compete at the collegiate level. Joshua Montone will compete at Drury University and Victor Cintron Rosario will compete at Oklahoma Christian University.
Georgia Coastal Aquatic Team hosts practices in Savannah at the Chatham County Aquatic Center and in Richmond Hill at the Richmond Hill Swim Club. All ages and levels are invited to join. Please visit gcatswim.com for additional information.
