Peace and quiet

Dr. Lawrence Butler, The Bridge Church, Pembroke

We live in a noisy world. From television, radios and cell phones in our homes to traffic, sirens and people talking, noise is everywhere. Often the sounds are not pleasant, but irritating and annoying.

Are you looking for a quiet place?

Here’s a word from the Lord. “And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance for ever” (Isaiah 32:17). Have you considered surrendering your life to Jesus? It is the only path to a quiet place of peace. “The work of righteousness” – living a godly life – will remove you from much controversy which disturbs the soul, disrupts sleep at night and steals joy from all the good in your life.

God really wants you to be happy and enjoying His blessings. Try living a righteous life and you’ll find peace, quiet and joy!

The message from Isaiah concerning quietness continues with not just the work of righteousness, but the effect it has on us. Notice we are told “the effect of righteousness is quietness and assurance for ever.” Assurance is defined as “being certain” and “freedom from self-doubt or uncertainty” (Miraim-Webster Dictionary).

In church we call this faith. It moves us beyond doubt and fear.

It strengthens our heart and mind to believe that things are going to be well. Remember the story of the disciples on the boat battling an over-powering storm while Jesus was asleep in the back. They were fearful they might die. Jesus was calm and asleep. They woke Him with fear and trepidation, even accusing Him of not caring about them. The difference was Jesus knew everything was going to be ok even though they were afraid.

Their faith failed them. How can we not be calm and quiet when Jesus is with us always. There was no way that boat could sink because the Son of God was on board. Never forget Jesus is with you through the Holy Spirit. You are not alone, and His word promises you’ll be fine.
