The Richmond Hill Garden Club is proud to announce the home of James and Crystal Pate as its September Yard of the Month. They have been the owners and caretakers in The Retreat at Richmond Hill Plantation Subdivision for 6 years.

The Pate family has officially transitioned to civilian life following James Pate’s recent retirement from the U.S. Air Force. Their story is a familiar one in Richmond Hill. Like many of their friends and neighbors, the Pates were brought to the area by what would become their final military assignment.

When asked about their gardening style, Mr. Pate laughingly replied that his wife tells him where to plant, and he follows her instructions. He was able, however, to name many of the plants and their blooming cycle, so he obviously knows more than he is letting on.

Despite the hot dog days of summer, the shade of the front porch welcomed guests to sit, as well as the lovely Thankful Wreath, “It’s Fall Y’all” doormat, and sweet carved wooden pumpkin. It was also no surprise to find a crisp U.S. flag flapping in the welcomed afternoon breeze.

Taking in the flower bed in the front and wrapping around to the side of the house, we found red long-stem roses, a yellow rose bush, Lime Light Hydrangea, and a row of Liriope with violet blooming stems. The star of the show was a newly purchased Hibiscus in brilliant yellow and red.

Along with our sincere congratulations, the Pates also received a Gift Certificate from Tim and Dave’s Nursery for $25.00.
