In one of the most improbable finishes imaginable, Richmond Hill remained unbeaten when senior wide receiver/defensive back Eli Grant returned a blocked field goal attempt 96 yards as time expired Friday night to give the Wildcats a 13-7 win at Ware County.

It was the second time this season special teams made a play that either led to a win or preserved a victory for the Wildcats, who are now 4-0 going into a home game with Wando, S.C., on Friday night.

In their season opener, the Wildcats blocked an Effingham County extra point attempt with two minutes left to enable them to hang on for a 22-21 win over the Rebels.

That was nothing, however, compared with what happened at Ware County.

Playing their first road game of the season, the Wildcats spotted the Gators a 7-0 lead early in the second quarter on a 4-yard pass from Demitris White to junior running back Moo McKoy to cap a 97-yard drive.

After getting a first down at the Richmond Hill three, two running plays lost a yard before White hit McKoy on a swing pass to the right out of the backfield, and he easily scored. Junior kicker Jeffrey Gonzalez kicked the extra point.

Richmond Hill tied the game with 3:10 left in the first half when Gunner Mobley hit Grant on a perfectly thrown 23-yard pass for the score. Shane Tucker kicked the extra point.

The touchdown was set up when Jaylen Deal recovered White’s fumble at the Ware 23. After a rushing attempt by CJ Menzie failed to gain anything, Mobley and Grant teamed up for the score.

It was Mobley’s sixth touchdown pass of the season and Grant’s fourth touchdown catch. It was the highlight of the night for Mobley, who was forced into a 3-for-16 passing night for 38 yards by a Ware defense which applied pressure all night. Mobley was intercepted once.

Gonzalez had missed a potential go-ahead field goal with eight minutes left but had a chance to redeem himself when he lined up for a 27-yard game-winner with 2.3 seconds to play.

Only things didn’t go as they were drawn up.

After Richmond Hill Coach Matt LeZotte called a timeout to freeze Gonzalez, the Gators saw their hopes for victory go down the drain when De’Vion Smalls-Clark rose to block the kick, which Grant caught at the four.

The speedy Grant took the ball on the left side of the field and headed for the right sideline with blockers in front of him against the stunned Gators. He shook off a tackler at the Ware 35, cut back to the center of the field and scored untouched from there.

It capped a big night for Grant, who also caught two passes for 30 yards and had an interception while scoring both Wildcats' touchdowns. He now has 14 receptions for 225 yards on the season.

Menzie picked up 106 yards on 18 attempts in a game in which yards were hard to come by. He also had a 68-yard kickoff return and upped his season rushing total to 442 yards.

Defensively, the Wildcats were led by Deal, who had 11 tackles to go with his fumble recovery. Layton Steigelman added 10 tackles with one sack, while Tre Brown added six tackles, two for a loss.
