One hundred and thirty National Honor Society students at Richmond Hill High School participated in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Light the World campaign for 2022.

Students gathered a truckload of new items to donate to the Tri-County Protective Agency in Hinesville. They also created domestic violence awareness posters for the school, handed out flyers at lunch time and discussed the alarming statistics with the student body.

Georgia ranks high in the U.S. for domestic violence disturbances and incidents. Georgia Commission on Family violence research from 2022 states “Known family violence-related fatalities in Georgia totaled 1,493; a 57% increase from 2012-2021.”

The Tri-County Protective Agency Executive Director Chandra Cox said, “we appreciate the love and munificence shared this year by the National Honor Society Students and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day in their efforts to gather donations and raise the awareness of Domestic Violence amongst their peers. These socially motivated young adults truly make our world a better place.”

“We wanted to help those suffering in our community and know how difficult the holidays can be for the victims and shelters,” said Darron R. Alvord Stake President of the Savannah Georgia Stake of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Dorothy Feaster, Advisor for National Honor Society at Richmond Hill High School, and a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints said, “Our students collected a lot of items, made fantastic posters and were able to learn more about domestic violence and share that knowledge with others. It was an amazing experience and we’re super grateful that we were able to contribute.”

“It was amazing to see how not only the NHS members were able to help but how our entire school was willing to contribute to this cause,” said Hannah Dixon, National Honor Society President at Richmond Hill High School.

Light the World is an invitation to transform Christmas into a season of service. It’s a worldwide movement to touch hearts and change lives by doing the things Jesus did: feeding the hungry, comforting the lonely, visiting the sick and afflicted, and showing kindness to everyone. Jesus said, “Ye are the light of the world” (Matthew 5:14). #LightTheWorld is the perfect way to let our light—and His light—shine brightly.
