Basketball season is still a few months away, but Richmond Hill head girls’ basketball coach Sarah Jones and head boys’ basketball mentor Bill Henderson know summer workouts and camps are the first steps toward the upcoming season.
Jones, who will begin her 13th season at the helm, has begun workouts and will continue them throughout June. She stated the team will attend camps at Bryan County (June 9-10) and Camden County (June 24-25).
The Wildcats finished last season with an overall 10-16 record, and they lost an opening-round state game to Camden County, 58-32. Cullen McCormick (9.9 points per game, 9.2 rebounds) and Faith Evans (4.9 rebounds, 2.6 rebounds) were lost to graduation.
Jones will have a number of returnees, and she also has high hopes for the incoming freshman class.
“The freshman class is a big class that had recent success at the middle school,” said Jones. “We are excited to get them started this summer in our program.
“The jump can be big sometimes coming from the middle school to high school, but we are excited to get them started this summer.”
Henderson, who will begin his 15th year at the helm, recently conducted a camp for 120 students at the high school. He also has begun his summer workouts.
He stated the team will attend camps at Georgia Southern (June 5-6), home with Bradwell (June 15), Calvary Day School (June 19-20), and Camden County ( June 24-25).
Richmond Hill ended last season with an overall 14-15 record. They were defeated by Buford County, 59-42, in an opening-round state game.
The Wildcats will lose six seniors from last year’s team, mainly fueled by leading scorers Josh Mock (12.7 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 2.3 assists) and Drew Nudo (12.2 points, 7.0 rebounds, 2.8 assists
Like Jones, Henderson also has been impressed with his incoming freshman.
‘The freshman class looks good,” said Henderson. “They had a good season this past year, and I liked what I saw when I had the chance to go and watch them.
“They have some talent and seem like a group that is going to work hard and buy into what we’re doing at the high school.”
