An early morning accident last Monday sent one man to the hospital after an excavator tipped over in the Waterford Landing subdivision in Richmond Hill.

According to Bryan County Fire Chief Otis Willis, an employee of local Banks Trucking Co. was attempting to unload the piece of construction equipment when it slid off the flatbed truck it was on just after 8 a.m.

“From the way the (equipment) operator described it, he was unloading the piece of equipment and the equipment fell off a lowboy (trailer) and it slipped,” Willis said. “I guess it got off balance and slipped off the bed of the trailer and fell over on its side with the operator in the cab.”

Willis said Bryan County Emergency crews were able to remove the front and top glass of the cab and get the operator out of the excavator. Willis said the operator did have some injuries.

“I’m not sure of the extent of the injuries but he was taken to (Memorial) hospital and he was alert and conscious when he left,” Willis said.

No other vehicles were involved in the accident, Willis said.
