Effective starting at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, April 22, 2026, the City of Richmond Hill issued a Declaration of Emergency temporarily restricting outdoor burning within the city limits. Prolonged dry weather has resulted in drought conditions that have significantly increased the risk of wildfires and the spread of uncontrolled fires. Open burning of yard debris poses a serious threat to public safety, property, and natural resources during periods of extreme dryness.

TEMPORARY RESTRICTIONS

All open burning of yard debris — including leaves, limbs, grass, and other vegetative matter — is restricted within the limits of the City of Richmond Hill. No person shall ignite or allow the burning of yard debris outdoors during this period.

EXEMPTIONS

The restriction does not apply to:

  • Controlled burns conducted by government agencies or authorized personnel for forestry or public safety purposes;
  • Fires used for cooking in approved grills or fire pits, provided they are attended and comply with applicable safety regulations; and
  • Agricultural or forestry burns conducted under a valid permit from the Georgia Forestry Commission in compliance with state law and Georgia Forestry Commission guidelines.

ENFORCEMENT AND DURATION

The declaration will be enforced by City of Richmond Hill officials and their designated departments, including the Richmond Hill Fire Department and the Richmond Hill Police Department. The restriction remains in effect until drought conditions improve. The City will provide public notice when the restriction is lifted.

PUBLIC SAFETY MESSAGE

Residents are urged to take extra precautions during this period of elevated fire risk. Dispose of smoking materials safely, use caution with outdoor cooking equipment, and report any signs of uncontrolled fire immediately by calling 911. Residents with questions about the restriction or yard debris disposal are encouraged to contact City Hall.
