Richmond Hill residents that need a GED may now go back to school in the mornings to prepare for the exam.

Savannah Technical College has added a morning session of its free GED-prep classes from 8:30-11:30 a.m. Monday-Thursday in Richmond Hill.

Thanks to a partnership with Bryan County Recreation, the free GED-prep classes will be offered at the class building at The Bottom baseball fields at 201 Magnolia St.

The college had a demand for morning classes in Richmond Hill but needed a location. STC’s Vice President of Adult Education Dr. Brent Stubbs reached out to Bryan County Recreation with the request.

“Dr. Mays immediately responded with interest and a desire to help,” said Stubbs.

"I thought the partnership with Savannah Technical College was a wonderful idea and it benefits Bryan county citizens,” said Bryan County Recreation Director Dr. Samose L. Mays. “I am a huge supporter of education. I am extremely happy that Bryan County Recreation could support these efforts."

Registration for the first morning class is at 8:30 a.m. Aug. 20. The first 25 students to register will receive lunch. Students are asked to bring a government issued ID to register.

Odds may be in your favor as a Bryan County resident – all Savannah Technical College students who took the GED last year passed, according to Stubbs.

Census data shows that 2,700 people in Bryan County need a GED, but only 55 had enrolled in GED classes last year.

“We believe this new site location will make it more convenient for people in Richmond Hill, thanks to the support of Bryan County government,” said Stubbs.

The college will continue to offer GED-prep the following Bryan County locations: Richmond Hill Public Library, Monday-Thursday afternoons; and Pembroke Public Library, Monday, Tuesday and Thursday evenings.

Students may register for GED-prep classes throughout the fall by checking the schedule at www.savannahtech.edu/bryan.

Adult education classes for GED®-prep are currently free for all U.S. citizens. To register for free GED classes, call 912-443-5446 or visit www.savannahtech.edu/FreeGEDClasses.
