THE BLACK PEARL Captain Jack Sparrow is headed back to the theater at least one more time, and the fifth installment of the Disney franchise has begun filming and received an official synopsis.

Disney announced Tuesday that filming of Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales began and star Johnny Depp will reprise his role as the iconic Captain Jack Sparrow.

The first Pirates film, Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, was well-received by both critics and audiences, but the following three films were not so well-received by either category.

Dead Men Tell No Tales has some promise with accomplished directors behind the camera and a proven screenwriter composing the story.

Writer Jeff Nathanson has penned the script for the fifth Pirates, and if he channels the same energy he gave to Catch Me If You Can then we really have something to look forward to. If he gives us something more along the lines of some of his other works like Speed 2: Cruise Control or Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of Crystal Skull, however, we could be in for a rough couple of hours.

The directing team of Espen Sandberg and Joachim Ronning are helming the ship and could offer up something fresh and beautiful. Sandberg and Ronning directed the 2012 film Kon-Tiki chronicling the true story of a legendary explorer who traveled 4,300 miles across the Pacific on a balsa wood raft.

Well have to wait until July 2017 to know whether the writer and directors deliver a re-energized Pirates film or another aimless so-called adventure. What we do know now, thanks to an official release from Disney, is the synopsis for Dead Men Tell No Tales.

Thrust into an all-new adventure, a down-on-his-luck Captain Jack Sparrow finds the winds of ill-fortune blowing even more strongly when deadly ghost pirates led by his old nemesis, the terrifying Captain Salazar, escape from the Devils Triangle, determined to kill every pirate at seaincluding him, the release read. Captain Jacks only hope of survival lies in seeking out the legendary Trident of Poseidon, a powerful artifact that bestows upon its possessor total control over the seas.

This synopsis suggests the new Pirates film is departing somewhat from the last installment, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, which may be a good thing considering its reception. The synopsis doesnt give any real indication if the rumors of Orlando Blooms character will return to the series, but what we do know is Javier Bardem will play the villain Captain Salazar.

Bardem is a great addition to the cast and hes already played a great Bond villain in Skyfall and one of the most terrifying hitmen of all time in No Country For Old Men.

Geoffrey Rush is also returning to the cast as Captain Barbosa and Brenton Thwaites from last years The Giver has also joined the cast.

The news on Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales gives audiences hope that the series can return to its former glory, but theres still a feel of hesitation lurking in the air of whether thats possible anymore.
