ELLABELL -- Konner Leggett, who had a breakout season as a sophomore last year when he was named the Region 3A Public Offensive Player of the Year, is showing he knows his way around on the pitching mound, too,
Leggett survived a rocky first inning and got outstanding support from his teammates to run his record to 4-0 to help lead Bryan County to an 11-5 win Tuesday night at Screven County in the Redskins’ region opener.
Despite the disparity of the score Bryan County got a mild scare as Screven County scored three runs in the bottom of the first to grab a quick 3-1 lead but that didn’t last long as Bryan County (8-2, 1-0) scored four runs in the third and five in the fourth to settle the issue.
Aaron Bailey drove in five runs giving him 18 RBI for the season to lead an 11-hit attack. Bailey was one of four Redskins with two hits. Leggett, Sean Kelly Hill and Jacob Hughes each had two singles with Hughes driving in three runs. Zach Sitton had two RBI.
Bailey had a sacrifice fly in the first, a two-run double in third, was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the fourth and singled in a run in the seventh.
In a game played last Friday at Hendrix Park three Bryan County pitchers combined to no-hit First Presbyterian Christian Academy in a 3-1 win. The Redskins are playing their home games at Hendrix as their field at the high school is undergoing an upgrade.
Coming off a four-RBI game at East Laurens the talented lefthander went the first four innings and was in charge from the outset as he struck out 10 Highlanders. He walked two and hit two batters.
While Leggett, Tanner Ennis and Zach Sitton were outstanding the win did not come easy. Bryan County was limited to three hits but was able to draw four walks and were helped by two FPCA errors.
The Redskins, who earlier in the week beat East Laurens 18-2, made the most of their opportunities against First Presbyterian, picking up single runs in the second, third and fourth innings.
Justin Beck’s two-out single scored courtesy runner Carson Nunn in the second for a 1-0 lead. After the Highlanders evened the score in the third but Bryan County responded with runs in the third and fourth innings.
Ennis was hit by a pitch to start the third inning, moved to when Hill walked and then stole third. He scored on Leggett’s fly ball to center.
The Redskins manufactured an insurance run in the fourth when Ennis singled with two out and stole second and third with Hill drawing a walk. The two then worked a double steal with Ennis scoring.
Ennis took over on the mound to start the fifth and was lights out as he worked two perfect innings, striking out five in the process. Sitton closed it out with a perfect one-two-three seventh with one strikeout.
