Redskins second overall at 2-AA meet

Bryan County High School track coach Blake Nesmith wanted his teams to be in position to win region titles during this week’s Region 2-AA meet at Savannah State University.
They were.
The Redskins finished second and the Lady Redskins third at the meet – and the two combined to finish second overall behind McIntosh County Academy.
“This is our first year in this region and we knew it would be a challenge, but the kids exceeded my expectations,” Nesmith said. “We wanted to be in the hunt at the end of the meet, and we were in it right up until the last event. Even though we came up a little short, I can’t say enough about how hard these kids ran and fought for every place.”
The program also picked up a handful of region crowns in its first year in 2-AA.
Sophomore Kaylee Perks won a region title in the discus with a throw of 94 feet, 2.5 inches. She joins seniors Trent Minis and Patrick O’Connell as region champs. Minis claimed first in the pole vault by clearing 10-6 while O’Connell won the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 17.51 seconds.
All three qualified for the Class AA sectional meet on April 27 at Lamar County High School in Barnesville. Joining them will be those who finished in the top four at the region meet, including relay teams.
