Before the city of Richmond Hill’s Veterans Day ceremony Wednesday morning, runners gathered at J.F. Gregory Park to honor a fallen hometown hero.

The Capt. Matthew Freeman Memorial Race is named for Marine Capt. Matthew Freeman, who was killed in Afghanistan in 2009. The race raised money for the nonprofit Matthew Freeman Foundation.

The focus of the race, said Freeman’s mother, Lisa Freeman, is to raise money for Gold Star families through the Sibling Scholarship Fund as well as to benefit the Matthew Bear Project, which provides handmade teddy bears to families who have lost service members.
