Former Richmond Hill High School football player Zach Broome will be wearing the garnet and black of the University of South Carolina this fall. Broome (85) recently made the Gamecocks football team as a walk-on and apparently is the first RHHS football player to play at an SEC school.
Broome, the son of Butch and Sherri Broome of Richmond Hill, ran for 1,463 yards and 19 touchdowns and threw for 319 yards and six touchdowns in 13 games as a quarterback for the Wildcats. He also returned six punts for 285 yards and two touchdowns and caught 12 passes for 270 yards and four touchdowns during a prep career limited by injury. "Zach has worked really, really hard to get where he is," Butch Broome said. "But he's still got a ways to go." Butch Broome is originally from Columbia, where USC is located. "It's ironic," he said. "Never did we dream he'd wind up there. We're real proud of him."
