Bryan County softball heads into its next-to-last Region 2-AA game today at Toombs County after a 6-1 win against Swainsboro at home Wednesday.

The win puts the Redskins at 10-13 overall and 5-7 in the region, but Coach Al Butler has high expectations for the region tournament that opens next week.

“We’ve finally got everyone back healthy, so we’ll see what happens,” he said. “The girls know they have a chance to put together a nice run.”

Bryan County scored four of its runs in the bottom of the third inning Wednesday on smart base running while taking advantage of a few errors by the Tigers.

Alyssa Edwards started things off with an infield hit, followed by Kelsey Leggett’s walk. A double-steal put runners on second a third, and Shelby Barfield’s walk loaded the bases. Alayna Williams’ sharp grounder to second brought home Edwards, and when Swainsboro booted the throw to third to get Leggett, she was able to spring for home, sliding under the catcher’s tag.

Williams would eventually score on an infield hit by Julianne Brown, and she later scored on a single by Audrey Williams.

Alayna Williams drove in Hannah Dickerson and Edwards, who had reached base on walks, with a single to left field in the bottom of the fourth.

Swainsboro scored its lone run in the top of the sixth.

“That was a typical Bryan County game,” Butler said. “We’re still not to the point of being able to put someone away when we have the chance.”

Butler said he expects to face Metter in a best-of-three series in the region tournament next week after finishing up the regular season at St. Vincent’s Academy Monday. Bryan County and Metter have met twice so far this season, with each team winning at home by one run in high scoring affairs — 10-9 and 11-10.

Richmond Hill loses 5-0 at Effingham

The Rebels scored five times in the bottom of the fifth inning Wednesday, handing the Wildcats their first Region 2-AAAAAA loss of the season. Richmond Hill managed just one hit but committed five fielding errors. The teams play again today at 5 p.m. at Richmond Hill.
