I remember being a ten-year-old English schoolgirl in London watching the BBC TV broadcasts about America’s bicentennial celebrations in 1976. I specifically remember seeing coverage of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip’s state visit to the USA on the British royal yacht, HMS Britannia, and the royal couple attending functions with President and Mrs. Ford. I never imagined that 50 years later I would be a naturalized American citizen who has spent over a quarter of my life here, and looking forward to celebrating the USA’s semiquincentennial in just nine days’ time. America 250 festivities to mark the 250th anniversary of the United States Declaration of Independence will soon be upon us and I am thrilled that I will be spending the day with my family and of course, watching a spectacular fireworks display.
Both the lands that became America and England had ancient civilizations, but England usually traces its establishment as a unified kingdom to 927AD under King Athelstan, making the land of my birth nearly 1,100 years old. Its much later union with Scotland, officially becoming the Kingdom of Great Britain took place in 1707, 69 years before the thirteen American colonies declared independence from Great Britain to form the United States.
Our nation’s upcoming anniversary is normally called a semiquincentennial which is half of a 500-year “quincentennial” although a quarter-millennium is also in popular use. A more unusual description is sestercentennial, which derives from ancient Roman roots and indicates "two and a half" centuries.
Why else is number 250 special? In mathematics, 250 is a highly composite and "smooth" number which holds unique properties that make it a favorite for mental calculations, percentages, and scaling.
The number 250 has other symbolic and historical importance. In the Bible there are a number of references to 250 including the number of men rebelling against Moses, who were swallowed up by a fire (Numbers 26:10). My favorite is about Holy Anointing Oil (Exodus 30:23–25): and the recipe for the sacred oil specifies 250 shekels of sweet cinnamon and 250 shekels of aromatic cane, alongside other spices and olive oil.
In numerology the energy represented by the number 250 resonates with intuition and introspection and is imbued with curiosity, diplomacy, and wisdom. Angel number 250 is a powerful spiritual message urging you to embrace upcoming life changes with faith, adaptability, and an open heart. It combines energies of balance (2), personal freedom (5), and infinite potential (0), assuring you that your choices align with your higher purpose.
Beware of the number 250 in China as it is often used as an insult to describe someone as being stupid, slow-witted or inappropriate. There are several widely circulated theories about the origin of "250" as an insulting word, but none of them have solid historical evidence, and most of them are folk legends and jokes. One of the more popular theories comes from the ancient Chinese currency unit "Zhiqian", which is a copper coin. It is
said that in the late Qing Dynasty, one hundred coins were held on one string, so two and a half strings were 250 coins. This amount was somehow considered either too much or too little, and it seemed a bit awkward and redundant. Therefore, it gradually extended to describe people who are neither good nor smart enough.
Here are a few more interesting facts relating to the number 250:
- In space Bettina is asteroid number 250. It was discovered by the Vienna Observatory in 1885.
- The food additive E-250 is Sodium Nitrite, which is classified as a preservative. According to some sources, the E-250 additive is considered dangerous.
- The Ferrari 250 GTO is a sports racing car dating back to the 1960s.
- In terms of telephone codes, in North America 250 is the area code for the Canadian Province of British Columbia, and it is the international dialing code for the African nation of Rwanda.
- The Roman numeral for 250 is CCL.
So how many countries have lasted 250 years? Depends on who you ask and how you measure it. If you look at unambiguous and continuous sovereign identity, there are 20 to 30. However, if you apply a looser interpretation of cultural continuity or historical predecessors, then the number jumps to about 40 or 50 or even more. Constitutional founding or cultural history? Like many gray areas in life, this can be endlessly debated.
So back to the USA. On July 4, 1776, the Continental Congress adopted a little one-page document announcing the breakaway from the Kingdom of Great Britain called The Declaration of Independence. It was signed by fifty-six delegates from the thirteen colonies, today collectively known as the Founding Fathers. And here begins one of the greatest adventures of human history:
“When in the Course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another, and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature's God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation.
We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness...” How fantastic!
