The Bryan County High School softball team had quite a first day in the Elite Eight.

The Lady Redskins defeated Seminole County 5-3 Thursday afternoon in their opening game of the Class AA championship tournament in Columbus. BCHS then snapped Gordon Lee's 27-game winning streak with a 1-0 win Thursday night.

Bryan County (29-10) was one of two teams to emerge from the first day of the tournament without a loss. The other was Region 2-AA rival Vidalia (33-3), which defeated Heard County 3-2 and Social Circle 5-1.

Bryan County will play Vidalia at 5 p.m. today in the fourth meeting of the season between the two teams. The winner will earn a spot in Saturday's championship.

BCHS ace Brooke Barfield was dominant against Gordon Lee (32-2), allowing only one hit while striking out 12 batters. Barfield also scored the game's only run, racing home from third base on an error in the seventh inning.

Barfield went 3-for-4 and drove in two runs in the win over Seminole County (20-6). Layton Harrell had two hits and two runs batted in.
