The first round of the Region 3A playoffs got off to a stellar start for top-seeded Bryan County High School. The Lady Redskins (23-6) swept No. 4 seed Montgomery County Eagles (10-13) on Thursday.
Bryan County, ranked No. 4 in the state Class A poll, won the first game 3-0 behind the solid pitching of ace Tiffany Howard, who struck out 14 batters and allowed only one hit.
Sierra Cornell was 2 for 2 with two RBIs and a run and Howard was 2 for 3 with two runs for Bryan County.
After a 15 minute break, the two teams met again with Howard back on the mound and Bryan County cruised to a 10-0 win in a game shortened to five innings by the mercy rule.
Howard was dominant on the mount, striking out nine while allowing only four hits as Bryan County jumped out to a big lead early courtesy a first-inning grand slam by Jerri Hines, her fifth home run of the season.
The Lady Redskins finished with 13 hits. Howard was 4 for 4 with an RBI and run scored;
Hines was 2 for 3 with four RBIs and two runs; Jenna Schuman was 3 for 3; and Cornell was 2 for 3 with an RBI and a run.
Bryan County advanced to the championship round, which will be held Oct. 5 in Dublin.
