Former Richmond Hill High School baseball standout Kevin Matthews is out for the season. Matthews, the 2011 first round draft choice of the Texas Rangers underwent surgery recently. In a Facebook message, Matthews said he was “done for the season,” but also noted “it was just a clean up” and “nothing too serious.” Earlier, T.R. Sullivan’s blog on texasrangers.com said the Rangers have lost both left-handed pitcher Kevin Matthews and outfielder Zach Cone for the season. Matthews needs surgery because of a bone spur in his left shoulder and Cone is out with a torn left Achilles tendon. Matthews was the 33rd overall pick of the 2011 draft and Cone was the 37th overall pick Sullivan earlier reported Matthews had been “dealing with an impingement in his shoulder since the beginning of Spring Training.” Matthews was supposed to start this season at Hickory (N.C.).

Summer Shootout
Bryan County High School’s sixth annual Summer Shootout Basketball Camp is June 3-5 at BCHS.
For boys and girls who will be in grades 2-9 next school year, the camp is from 9 a.m. to noon each day. The cost is $35 per child and $30 for each additional family member through May 17. Kids who register before May 17 will receiver a free camp T-shirt.
Late registration is $40 for the first child and $35 for each additional family member.  Students can bring money for snacks. The camp staff will include coaches and varsity players from the Lady Redskins.

Howard upping her batting average at Auburn
 Former Bryan County High School four-sport standout Tiffany Howard has upped her batting average at Auburn, where she is a freshman center fielder.
Howard, the two-time state Class A player of the year while at BCHS, has started 43 of 46 games and is currently hitting .304 for the Lady Tigers.
She is among the top five on the team in average, slugging percentage (.348), runs scored (31), hits (35), triples (1) total bases (40), hit by pitch (4), stolen bases (10), stolen-base percentage (1.000) and strikeouts (20).
Howard leads the team in sacrifice bunts with six and is tied for the team lead in sacrifice hits with two. She’s also among the top five in games started with 43.
Auburn is 28-20 overall and 7-14 in the SEC.
