Jeremiah Jones had it in his sights. Jones, a senior safety, intercepted an Effingham County pass with just over two minutes left in the game that halted a potential game-winning drive. It also proved to be the catalyst toward a Richmond Hill 22-21 victory in their home and season opener.
“I had a clear vision,” recounted Jones. “My mind told me that I need to make a big play that would turn the game around.”
In addition to his interception, Jones had seven tackles and he blocked an extra point.
Head coach Matt LeZotte was confident his defense would eventually register an interception against Effingham quarterback Matthew Dillon. Jones verified his prediction.
“Safety Jeremiah Jones is one heck of a football player,” said LeZotte. “He is an explosive athlete who plays fast and physical, and he makes an impact all over the field.
“He’s aggressive coming downhill in run support and has the athleticism and instincts to excel in pass coverage. He is a true playmaker on the back end who brings energy, toughness, and explosiveness every snap.”
Jones was a bit of a late bloomer to the game, as he began playing at age 12. It really was a matter of transportation.
“I always had a passion to play,” said Jones. “But I just didn’t have the opportunity to start as early as I wanted.
“My parents (Gary and Erica) worked a lot, and I wouldn’t have any rides to and from practice and games.”
When he did start playing, Jones made an impact. He was part of a 12-under championship team. Since he started playing, Jones has continued to find a familiar spot on the field.
“I’ve been playing defensive back ever since I’ve started playing,” said Jones. “Playing defensive back, I’ve learned it takes patience, eye discipline, and determination.”
Jones credits secondary coach Collin Oliver for his development.
My biggest influence in football has to be coach Oliver,” emphasized Jones. “In every step of the way he pushes me to our standard to make me the athlete I am today.”
Last season, Jones found comfort in his play, but he also saw how his team became disjointed.
“Last year, we had a great start to the season, but suddenly lost the streak, with that we also had an unhealthy roster due to injuries,’ said Jones. “I started to feel comfortable and confident towards the end of my junior season.”
This season, Jones and his teammates have high expectations.
“This team that we have is definitely capable of making a big run this year as long as we play our brand of football and not down to anyone we play,” said Jones. “Everyone is up and going everyday, ready to see what this year brings.”
