Allen, Bulldogs fall short of auto bid

The Citadel lost 31-23 at ninth-ranked Chattanooga on Saturday in its bid for the Southern Conference’s automatic spot in the Football Championship Subdivision playoffs.

Richmond Hill native and The Citadel quarterback Dominique Allen had 99 yards rushing and was 8-of-16 passing for 92 yards and two touchdowns, according to ESPN.com.

The Bulldogs fell to 7-3 overall and 6-1 in the SoCon and will wrap up the regular season Saturday at South Carolina.
According to FoxSports.com, 10 conference champions automatically qualify for the 24-team FCS playoff field.

The website projects The Citadel, which is ranked No. 24, to make the playoffs as an at-large selection.
Allen, a sophomore, has shined this season for the Bulldogs, ranking second in the SoCon and tied for 16th in FCS with 11 rushing touchdowns, according to CitadelSports.com. He leads the team in rushing with 692 yards and is 42-of-81 passing for 734 yards, four touchdowns and five interceptions.
