Who are you comparing yourself to?

People seem to try to compare themselves with others in order to evaluate how good they are. It is usually someone to their far left which doesn't make them look so bad. In history it might be someone like Hitler, or in recent years, someone who takes part in a mass shooting.

The one we should compare ourselves with is God Himself who is described as perfect in Matthew 5:48. When a person does this, he or she comes to the same conclusion found in Romans 3:23 which tells us, "for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God". We do fall short, but it doesn't give us an excuse to be satisfied with anything short of desiring to live a godly life. In that same Matthew verse where it tells us that God is perfect, it goes on to challenge us to aim at that same perfection. The exact words are, "Be perfect as your Father in heaven is perfect".

How do we even become more like God? First, we must confess our sinfulness and then ask the Lord to come into our lives and cleanse us. 1 John 1:9 reveals these truths when it says, "If we confess our sins, he (God) is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness". Then totally submit to the transforming power of the Holy Spirit. I think this is what the Apostle Paul is talking about in Romans 12:1-2 where he said, "Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God-this is your true and proper worship. Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind".

On our own we will fall flat on our face, trying to achieve holiness. But when we allow God's Spirit to work from within, then He can truly help us to become more like our heavenly Father.
