A Richmond Hill man was killed Friday morning when his Ford Explorer ran up underneath a parked tractor trailer near I-95 exit 90, according to authorities.

Bryan County Sheriff’s Department Capt. Mike Maxwell said the tractor trailer driver, from Orlando, had pulled over into the emergency shoulder around 3 a.m. to investigate some electrical problems. Maxwell said the driver was between the cab and the trailer when he heard a loud noise.

Maxwell said the noise turned out to be the Explorer carrying driver Scott Allen Jaffe, 38, and passenger Katie McGarrity, 28, both of Richmond Hill. The Explorer ran up about seven feet underneath the parked tractor trailer before it rested.

Jaffe was killed at the scene while McGarrity sustained serious injuries and was transported to Memorial Hospital for treatment.

Additional information was unavailable Friday. The accident is under investigation.
