A proposed property tax change could make Bryan County homeowner’s tax bills more predictable, according to a local state representative.
District 164 Rep. Ron Stephens talked about the plan Monday during a “Mayor’s Table” community forum in Richmond Hill, hosted by Mayor Kristi Cox.
Stephens said a proposed ballot measure would freeze school property taxes based on 2025 values.
He said the goal is to help protect homeowners from seeing their tax bills rise as home values increase.
“Your value of your home will continue to go up as you want it to, but your taxable value will be another column over to one side, and it’ll be frozen for as long as you stay in your home, unless you make major additions, that kind of stuff,” Stephens said.
Stephens said voters in both Bryan and Chatham counties will have the chance to weigh in on the proposal this November. He also said the change would make school property taxes consistent with other existing local tax freezes.
