SAVANNAH — Savannah's first female mayor, Susan Weiner, has died from complications from a surgical procedure. She was 66.

Her sister, Linda Scher, said she died Saturday at a hospital in Gainesville, Ga. She said a private memorial service is planned in Rabun Gap, where Weiner lived for several years.

The Savannah Morning News (http://bit.ly/PeCsUq ) reports that Weiner grew up in Albany, N.Y., and worked as an actress before moving to Savannah in 1985. She ran for mayor in 1991, defeating five-term incumbent John Rousakis. She lost a re-election bid in 1995 to then-Alderman Floyd Adams Jr., who became Savannah's first African-American mayor.

The following year she became executive director of a Republican booster group, the Good Government for Georgia Committee.
