Fort Stewart Public Affairs released the name of a soldier who was killed in a traffic accident Tuesday on Georgia Highway 144 on Fort Stewart. He has been identified as Spc. Robert Bridges, 32, a behavioral health specialist, according to a news release.

The accident occurred around 6 a.m. and remains under investigation by both Fort Stewart police and the Georgia State Patrol Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team.

According to Georgia State Patrol Trooper Matthew Nelson, Bridges had apparently sustained a flat tire and was sitting in his vehicle on the eastbound lane of 144 just inside the gates of Fort Stewart, near Richmond Hill, when the accident occurred. Nelson previously said Bridges’ vehicle was struck from behind by an approaching vehicle causing both cars to spin out.

Bridges was transported to Memorial Health University Medical Center in Savannah where he was later pronounced dead.

The driver of the other vehicle suffered minor injuries. Charges are pending.

Bridges was assigned to the Headquarters and Headquarters Company, Special Troops Battalion, 3rd Infantry Division Sustainment Brigade, 3rd Infantry Division. He served in the Army for more than a year and was assigned to Fort Stewart for the past 11 months. 

“Bridges was a hard working soldier and loved what he did for our unit and the Army.  He was well-liked by those he worked with and will be greatly missed,” said Capt. Jonathan Liggitt, his company commander.

He is survived by a wife and son.
