Construction at the intersection of Highway 17 and Sommers Boulevard are now underway and is expected to last about six months.

Due to the close proximity of the work being done next to the road, motorists could encounter a single lane closures on northbound and southbound lanes of Highway 17. Motorists are advised to use extra caution in this work zone.

According to the Georgia Department of Transportation, intersection improvements will include the installation of traffic signals, crosswalks, wheelchair ramps, extending the northbound and southbound deceleration lanes and restriping.

“Each intersection is reviewed to determine if the intersection meets the federal guidelines for the installation of a traffic signal” said District Traffic Engineer Rob McCall. “The intersection of U.S. 17/S.R. 25 and Sommers Boulevard met those requirements.”

The estimated construction cost is $479,945.88 for this intersection improvement project, and Ricketson Construction Company, Inc. is the project’s contractor.
