Raccoon theft is a new for city police

Pembroke police have an unusual theft case on their hands.
On the morning of Jan. 8, Elijah Lewis, a former Pembroke City Council member, reported someone had broken into his work shed in his backyard on Williams Road and took seven frozen raccoons sometime during the night.
“Someone entered into his refrigerator and stole seven raccoons,” said Pembroke Police Cpl. Stacy Strickland, who responded to the call just before 10 a.m. Jan. 8.
Thefts of frozen animals are rare.
“This is the first time this has ever happened to me in a 17-year career,” Strickland said.
Lewis, who could not be reached Friday morning, told police the raccoons were valued at $20 each and he was holding them to sell to someone. Strickland didn’t know if Lewis hunted and killed the raccoons himself, or what he really does with them.
“I didn’t really get into any detail with him concerning that part,” he said.
Lewis did name someone he suspected of stealing his raccoons, but that person denied involvement, Strickland said.
Lewis was a Pembroke City Council member from 2000 to 2008, according to city hall.
