A former Chatham County school teacher who lives in Richmond Hill was indicted Wednesday on charges he tried to lure a student into sexual contact.

Alan Otwell Toney, 43, was indicted by a Chatham County grand jury on one count of computer pornography and two counts of obscene contact with a child.

Toney used an Internet chatroom sometime between March 6 and 22 “to attempt to seduce, lure and entice a child under 16 years of age … to commit the offenses of child molestation,” according to the indictment.

The grand jury also charged Toney with using an Internet chat service to convey “explicit verbal descriptions of sexually explicit nudity, sexual conduct and sexual excitement that was intended to arouse and satisfy the sexual desires” of Toney and a child under 16.

Similar language is used in the charge that Toney also had inappropriate telephone contact with the student, adding that his explicit descriptions included “sadomasochistic abuse.”

Toney was arrested March 23 by Pooler police after a 13-year-old girl’s mother showed an officer the cellphone to which he allegedly had been sending texts of a sexual nature.

Toney had been an eighth-grade teacher at Georgetown K-8 School in Savannah. Initially following his arrest, Toney was reassigned to a non-classroom position within the Savannah-Chatham County Public School System.

"This teacher resigned and is not employed with the district," SCCPSS spokesman Kurt Hetager said in an email Wednesday night.
