Meet Blitchton’s Rick Mitchell, electrician and baseball coach.
How long have you been living in Bryan County?
About nine and a half years. We found a nice house in Blichton and moved here from Stilson.
What’s your impression of the Blichton area?
I enjoy living in this particular part of Bryan County. There is a lot of growth in Blichton these days - more businesses and people.
I know you are on the Hendrix Park Youth Association Board. How are things at the Park?
I’m trying to build an 8-year-old to 18-year-old travelling baseball team. Our area just doesn’t have that right now – but we’re getting there. In the last two years, we’ve created two eight-year-old teams, my ten year old team, a 12-year old and we’re working on the other age brackets as we go.
What inspired you to get with involved with the rec department?
I wanted to coach because I played ball from the time I was 7-8 years old all the way up through high school. When my kids got old enough to play ball, I decided to do it.What’s the name of the team you coach and have you seen some success in recent competition?
The Ogeechee Riverdogs. We just played in four tournaments and placed near the top in all of them. We practice three times a week. The kids get along great and have a good time, and that’s what it’s all about.
How old are your children?
Rick is nine and Zack is 19. I coached both of them at the 10U level. I’ve been coaching for about 10 years now.
What do you do for a living?
I own my own electrical business, Savannah Electrical and Construction. Our main office is in Savannah, but we’re also out of my residence in Blichton.
How is business right now?
Well, it’s a bit slow right now, but I guess you can say that for a lot of businesses right now with the economy the way it is.
Do you enjoy what you do?
I love it.
What pro teams do you like?
I like the Braves and the Falcons. On the college level, I love the Georgia Bulldogs.
Do you have a favorite television show?
I watch a lot of the home improvement channel. I have a lot of rental property, and I get a lot of ideas from that. I watch a lot of sports too.
Do you have a favorite musician or band?
Not just one in particular, but I like most of the country music bands on the radio. I pretty much keep my radio dial on Kix 96.
