Local swimmers make their mark at USC swim meet

Veronicca Thompson, Megan Wallace, Morgan Randolph, Alex Thompson, Rachel Wallace and Mark Taylor reside in Richmond Hill and are members of the Georgia Coastal Aquatics Team (GCAT) under the direction of former Olympic bronze medalist Bill Forrester.

All of the swimmers had stellar performances at the 2007 Carolina Aquatics Long Course Open held June 1-3 at the University of South Carolina in Columbia. Four of the swimmers pictured to the right achieved Georgia State Qualifying Times or faster.

Their individual times and events follow: Addison Randolph, competing in the 11-12 girls' age group, turned in a 2:43.53 in the 200 backstroke, a 1:31.86 in the 100 breaststroke, a 34.55 in the 50 backstroke and 5:58.58 in the 400 IM.

Morgan Randolph, competing in the girls' 10-and-under class, finished with times of 41.06 in 50 fly, 1:48.03 in the 100 breaststroke, 43.27 in the 50 backstroke and 1:17.15 in the 100 freestyle.

Mark Taylor, swimming in the boys' 11-12 group, had times of 3:34.03 in the 200 breast stroke and 37.97 in the 50 backstroke.

Alex Thompson, also swimming in the girls' 11-12 age group, had times of 2:56.83 in the 200 IM, 3:26.57 in the 200 breaststroke, 1:22.59 in the 100 backstroke, 1:25 in the 100 fly, 2:57.71 in the 200 backstroke and 39.20 in the 50 backstroke.

Megan Wallace swam the 50 free in 33.40 and led off in the 200 free relay with a 32.98. The state qualifying time for her age group for that event is 32.59. She is .39 of one second away from her goal. Her twin sister, Rachel Wallace, swam the 50 fly in 38.65. The state qualifying time for her age group in the fly is 35.89.

Veronica Thompson showed great time improvements in all of her events at the Carolina Long Course Open swimming the 50 breaststroke in 53.99 and the 50 back in 48.93. Veronica is the younger sister of Alex Thompson.

"We have some great families involved with GCAT," Coach Bill Forrester said. "We expect the program to grow in Richmond Hill as more swimmers become involved in the sport."
