Wildcats' Harris, Redskins' Smith have big games for respective teams

Senior running back Ronnie Harris rushed for 185 yards and two touchdowns and Richmond Hill High School’s defense pitched a shutout in the Wildcats 20-0 season-opening win Friday over visiting Johnson.

Quarterback Xavier Bryant-Long added a 20-yard TD pass to D.J. O’Neil for RHHS. Bryant-Long completed seven passes for 75 yards and added 26 yards on the ground for RHHS, which played in front of a packed house.

The win was the first as a head coach for Josh Eads, who took over the program in April.

Richmond Hill plays at Bradwell Institute on Friday night in a Region 3-AAAAA matchup. s

The Tigers lost 28-21 to Calvary Day in their season opener in Savannah. They’re also under a first-year head coach, former Georgia Southern great Greg Hill.

Redskins fall to Claxton

Bryan County High School led until the fourth quarter, but Claxton scored a 29-21 win over the Redskins in a nonregion matchup Friday in Pembroke.

The loss dropped Bryan County to 0-2, but for a while it looked the Redskins were going to notch their first win of 2014.

Bryan County opened the scoring on a 5-yard run by Tre Smith, then extended its lead to 13-0 on A.J. Simmon’s 20-yard fumble recovery return in the second quarter.

After Claxton cut the score to 13-7 in the third quarter, Smith scored on a short run and quarterback Jeremy McClendon ran in a two-point conversion to give the Redskins a 21-7 lead.

The Tigers scored three unanswered touchdowns as the game wound down to earn the win.

Smith led the Redskins with 101 yards on 20 carries while McLendon added 61 yards on 12 carries. McClendon was 2-of-9 for 25 yards, one touchdown and was picked off three times.

Bryan County plays host to Southeast Bulloch at 7 p.m. Thursday in the WSAV game of the week. The game will be televised live to a regional audience and replayed over the weekend. Check WSAV.com for stations and times.

The Yellow Jackets are 0-2 after losing 24-0 to South Effingham on Friday in Guyton. SEB fell 44-26 to PierceCounty in the opener.
