Police are looking at a Fort Stewart soldier as a person of interest in the stabbing death of a Midway man.

Liberty County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Keith Moran said the soldier, whose name has not been released, was found suffering from a single stab wound on a dock at the Cay Creek Wetlands Interpretive Center on Charlie Butler Road in Midway. Benjamin O’Neal, 60, who reportedly had been stabbed multiple times, was found near the soldier. He was taken to Liberty Regional Medical Center and later pronounced dead.

The soldier was airlifted to Savannah’s Memorial Health University Medical Center, where he is listed in stable condition. Moran said O’Neal had gone to the dock to fish or crab when he was stabbed.

Officers Mark Rich, Dennis Abjie and Matt Ainsworth from the Midway Police Department along with  Liberty County Sheriff’s Deputy Ralph Dixon and Midway Volunteer Fire and Rescue  Department first responders arrived on scene at about 10:28 a.m., according to Rich.

“When we arrived, we found both men lying on the dock suffering from stab wounds,” he said. “As soon as the first responders saw what was going on, they immediately began to treat their wounds.”
