GBI investigating probation office
Called in by sheriff
bryan county sheriff

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is looking into financial improprieties regarding the Bryan County Probation Office and former county probation officer Shannon Rivera.

Cathy Sapp, the Special Agent in Charge of the GBI’s Statesboro office, said her agency was called in Aug. 13 by Bryan County Sheriff Clyde Smith after the department noticed “issues of financial improprieties.”

“He asked us to take over the case,” she said, noting the investigation is still ongoing as an outside auditing firm finishes up a forensic audit.

Smith confirmed Rivera’s dismissal and that he’d called the GBI in to investigate.
