SAVANNAH — America’s Second Harvest of Coastal Georgia received a $10,000 check from South State Bank Friday to address food insecurity in Coastal Georgia.

The donation is earmarked for disaster relief following Hurricane Matthew. During the 10 days after the storm, Second Harvest provided more than 231,000 pounds of food to those needing immediate assistance.

"We are delighted that we were able to help fulfill the needs of the community but the significant emergency distribution set us back on our daily distribution capabilities," Second Harvest Executive Director Mary Jane Crouch said. "This generous donation from South State Bank will help us replenish our warehouse in order to provide nutritious food during the winter months."

The bank’s Regional President Holden Hayes presented the check to Crouch.

Second Harvest is in Savannah and serves as the distribution center for more than 300 nonprofit agencies that partners, including some in Liberty and Long counties.

Crouch said that in Coastal Georgia alone, there are more than 155,000 — 56,690 of them being children — who are unsure where they will get food.
