A tornado tore through the Pembroke and Ellabell areas, according to county officials and eyewitness reports. Emergency shelters have been set up at Lanier Primary and Bryan County Elementary.

On person was killed in the storm, according to Bryan County Coroner Bill Cox.

An unconfirmed number of Bryan County residents were taken to East Georgia Regional Medical Center Tuesday evening with injuries suffered during the severe weather.

Around 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Bryan County Fire & Emergency Services announced on social media "North Bryan: TAKE COVER!!! STAY INDOORS!!! Possible Touchdown in Pembroke."

Later, the agency added, "We have reports multiple houses with people entrapped in the city and in the county!"

Earlier, a tornado warning was issued for several area counties, including much of northern Bryan County.

Video and photos have surfaced on social media showing what appears to be a tornado in the Pembroke and Ellabell areas, as well as large hail and heavy rain. That same line of storms moved into Effingham County.

One such photo showed a tornado near the Daniel Defense facility in Black Creek.

It was reported someone was trapped inside a damaged structure on Ledford Street in Pembroke.

"North Bryan has taken a pretty hard hit. We have multiple agencies coming to assist," the Bryan County Sheriff's Office posted on social media. "This is not the time to be taking pictures and just driving around. Obey all law enforcement directions and keep an eye open for emergency lights."

The sheriff's office added, "We are blocking off as many roadways that are hazardous as possible. If a car is blocking a roadway then that means it is closed. Do not stop and ask if the roadway is open. Please get inside somewhere safe and hunker down for a while. We will continue to update as possible as there is no service."
