After suffering a hamstring injury last season, senior quarterback Gunner Mobley believes he can be a viable option as a rusher for Richmond Hill. And on Friday night he proved his point, racing out of the backfield for two rushing touchdowns and throwing for two others in the Wildcats’ 42-7 thrashing of Liberty County at Wildcat Stadium.
Mobley is now anxious to prove his point for his team that is poised for a deep postseason run.
“It was around the fourth week of the season last year when I injured it,” recalled Mobley. “Being able to rehab it, I’ve gotten more comfortable with it.
“Running the ball is one of my better skills I will be able to utilize this season.”
Mobley also had a good night passing the ball, being efficient and effective in completing eight of 12 attempts for 122 yards.
He fired a perfect strike to Nick Cameron in stride on a post pattern that gave the Wildcats a 21-0 lead with 9:26 left before halftime. Mobley followed that with a dump pass to Eli Grant, who sprinted across the field 19 yards and into the end zone for a 28-0 bulge.
Earlier, Mobley guided the team down the field on their opening six-play, 71-yard drive and scored on a 15-yard sprint for an early 7-0.
He added his second rushing score on their next possession when he took the team down the field on a 10-play, 69-yard jaunt and capped it with a five-yard dash.
The Wildcats scored on all of their five possessions of the opening half, recording their final one when CJ Menzie plowed over from two yards out for a 35-0 cushion that signaled a running clock in the second half. Menzie, who had 116 yards in their opening win, finished the game with 93 yards on 11 carries.
De'Vion Smalls-Clark recovered a fumble in the end zone for the Wildcats’ final score.
With the game clearly out of reach, the Wildcats’ starters sat the entire second half. Their defense totally shut down Liberty’s offense, limiting them to 41 yards and two first downs in the opening half.
Coming into the game, Mobley had a good feeling.
“We prepared really well for it, and we knew what was going to happen,” said Mobley. “We executed, and a big shout out to ur O-(offensive)-Line.”
Mobley has an extra special incentive for the game. He also shook off some first-game rust when he was 11-for 21 for 57 yards.
“My mom and dad went to Liberty,” said Mobley. “So, I really wanted to do good tonight. I felt more comfortable out there after last week.”
Mobley insists his team is keeping everything in its proper perspective with their 2-0 start.
“We just want to be 1-0 every week and we don’t look ahead,” he said. “It was nice to get some rest and have the younger guys get in the game.
Head coach Matt LeZotte was happy to see Mobley have a big game with his arm and legs.
“Gunner got the protection, and he saw the field well,” said LeZotte. “He had a good week of practice, and he showed what he can do when he is locked in.”
LeZotte also wanted his team to make their mark early in the game.
“We had some pretty big mistakes last week that kept us from moving the ball,” noted LeZotte. “We just focused on them all week. We wanted to go out and control the tempo and the dialogue in the game, and our guys did a great job doing that.
“They executed our game plan to perfection on both sides of the ball. I couldn’t be more proud of them. It was a heckuva night for the Wildcats.”
